Title: Captain Marvel
Released: 2019
Rated: PG-13
Captain Marvel came out in theaters March of 2019 (before Infinity Wars). Captain Marvel is Marvel’s first film starring a female protagonist. It’s a big deal because in the past Marvel films have always had a male protagonist like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Black Panther. I am not saying that it is a bad thing – I like all of those Marvel heroes – but when it’s a female hero they can show little girls out there that they can be strong, and that they don’t need a man telling them what they can or can’t do… And that they can do anything.
Captain Marvel is one of Marvel’s strongest heroes. Before watching the movie in the theater, I made a picture of Poppy (from one of my favorite animated movies Trolls) look like Captain Marvel, and I bet you want to know why. The reason I did this is because just looking at the trailers Carol Danvers talks about always getting back up to show that she is strong. That made me think about Poppy’s song in the original Trolls movie called “Get Back Up Again” because in that song Poppy is saying she is not giving up, no matter how hard the adventure is; and that if you knock knock her over she will get back up again. So that’s a thing that Carol/Captain Marvel and Poppy have in common. I called my drawing Captain M-Pop, and I showed that picture off during a Special Olympics Live stream with my partner Katie as we led up to our Abu Dhabi trip for the Special Olympics World Summer games.
